A Swedish Visit

At home in Sweden sensei Hermansson often tells us about Okinawa and some of the world's top masters. Now it's time to finally go there. It was with great anticipation we stepped on to the plane for two weeks of training in karate, kobudo and iaido. Incredibly exciting!

When we stepped off the plane, it was very hot and Malin first thought it was the heat from the plane engines. After a moment, she realized that it was actually so warm, about 35 degrees, incredible! In Sweden we have 20 to 25 degrees in the summer and sometimes it could reach 28 degrees. In the winter, we could have minus 10 - 20 degrees and it can get down to minus 28 degrees.

We got to stay in Akamine senseis beautiful dojo and had all the comforts we wanted. Almost every morning we started the day by walking 45 minutes to the Budokan, where we trained Iaido for 2-3 hours with Hamamoto sensei. One day we practiced tameshigiri. We were nervous at first but it dropped a bit after a while. After training, we used to buy lunch to eat at some nice place. Some days when there was not any training we did some different things. We went to the beach and we walked around and looked in the shops. We bought a lot of nice things to take home. One day we went by train and looked at the emperor's palace. Several nights a week we practiced kobudo with Akamine sensei and his helpful and nice students. It was educational and fun.

After training at the Hombu Dojo

When there was not any training at the dojo we practiced kobudo for Hokama Sensei and Nakamoto sensei. We also practiced karate with sensei Hermansson. Akamine sensei was kind and took us to Habu Park along with his wife and son. Habu-snakes are truly awe! Afterwards, we ate sushi and got to meet his lovely grandchild. We really appreciated getting to meet his family. It was nice! Akamine sensei also took us to Ocean Sea Park along with Taira -san. It was awesome!

One weekend we went to Tokashiki Island where we rented a bungalow. It became lazy days on the beach. In the evening we grilled some nice food and we also had time for some karate training. It was an extremely beautiful island!

Sensei Hermansson arranged a really educational and memorable trip for us, thank you sensei. We also would like to thank Akamine sensei for letting us stay and train with him. We are very grateful. It was a few tired and very happy students who sat on the airplane home. A dream has come true and we have seen and learned a lot. We will gladly come back and have already started planning when we can go next time.

Thank you very much!
