A German Visit

I first met Akamine Kaicho on a seminar in Erlangen, Germany this May and was deeply impressed by his profound knowledge, exact techniques as well as his open-minded and warm-hearted personality.
Having been on a business trip to Shanghai this November I did not think twice and took the chance to make the short jump over to Okinawa to spend a week at the Shinbukan Hombu Dojo.

Penny Sensei picked me up at the airport and drove me to the dojo which turned out to be really nice and provides everything one needs. The 2 hours evening lessons took place in a very concentrated atmosphere and with individual teachings. There were so many new details and information I had not known before but Kaicho was very patient with me and repeated everything until he was (more or less ) satisfied. Staying at the dojo gave me the advantage to practice throughout the day, so I tried to wrap up the newly learned bits and pieces during the morning and afternoon.

As this was my third trip to Okinawa, I already knew some places around Naha-City. But this time I rented a car for 2 days so I could explore some areas further away. This is really a beautiful island with some nice beaches, old castles and interesting sites about Karate- and Kobudo history (I personally recommend to visit Hokama senseis Karate museum, Shikinaen Royal Garden as well as the “Okinawa World” with its historical buildings and traditional dance show).

After the week, which went much too fast, I returned to Germany with loads of new impressions and a lot of details that will fill the next months of practice to let it settle.

I am really thankful that Kaicho as well an Penny Sensei spent their time to give me extra lessons and were taking me out in the evenings (I liked the Dojo bar!). Also l appreciate the warm hospitality I experienced from everybody in the dojo.
Special thanks to Sam for all her helpful tips!

Looking forward to return as soon as possible…
