Key points

  • The transition from Shodan to Nidan should not simply be a matter of learning three new Kata.  Instead the quality of the Kata and the techniques need always improve.
  • Of particular importance to the transition from Shodan to Nidan is the kime or focus in which the Kata is done.  A Kata done without error but with no more fluidity and focus than that of a Shodan practitioner performing a Shodan Kata will result in a failed grading examination
  • Tunfá is the new weapon and added to give the student a chance to learn more hand control. With Tunfá it is important to be able to stop the weapon from over swing.  different strikes add to the exercise.

Shushi no Kon Dai  周氏の棍大

This paragraph contains a brief description of the Kata

Key points

  • This Kata has a signature movement near the end where the practitioner goes from the kamai to very powerful circular counter clockwise movement down parallel to the right leg while stepping to the side into an okutsu dachi オウ屈立ち.  Following this move there is a second powerful movement in a clock wise direction also ending parallel to the leg.  Following these two movements remember to step cleanly into neko ashi dachi 猫足立ち back to the front into a kamai before doing the shomen uchi.

Chatanyara no Sai  北谷屋良の釵

This paragraph contains a brief description of the Kata

Key points

  • Be careful with the placement of the thumb on the one legged gedan barai. 下段払い The thumb should be pointing to the side of your body not to the front of the body.  This will allow your wrist to be supple enough to transfer the force of the block to your opponent's weapon.  The same principle applies to the jodan harai uke 上段払い受け movements but the orientation of the block is to the side instead of the front.
  • Be careful to keep your feet together when ducking down and placing the sai on the floor in the second pass in the Kata.  It is easy to confuse this movement with a similar one in Chikenshitahaku no Sai where the right leg is moved to the back allowing the knee to touch the ground next to your left foot.

Hama Higa no Tunfá  浜比嘉のトゥンファー

This paragraph contains a brief description of the Kata

Key points

  • There are three basic types of Tunfá, rounded, square, and bevelled so that the end is thicker than were the handle is.  It is best if you can choose one style that suits you when you begin your training.
  • Remember to make the tsuki after the figure eight movements clean and with tanden 丹田and kime 決め.  It is a common error to rush the punch and not use proper focus.
